As February creeps up on us, what better time to take a look at some of the expected trends to take place this year.
Some renovation trends will always be in-style, but below are a few we think will be on the uprise in 2020.
Trends for the Year:
Health & Wellness: Wellness focused home-improvements are definitely on the rise. Products that focus on overall health will be in high demand this year. From Water and Air Purifiers to Circadian Lighting for improved sleep and plenty of Non-Toxic materials. Keeping our homes as clean and natural as possible is becoming the in-thing for 2020.
Cost-Savings: It is expected that Renovations are on the decline for this year, but that won’t stop money being spent. Cost-saving projects will keep moving forward, such as energy-efficient lighting and appliances, improved Roofing and home insulation.
DIY: 2020 is the year that could see the highest rate of DIY’er’s to date. With access to online forums and video sites (YouTube & Pinterest), homeowners are taking things into their own hands. Technology and research can go a long way to help projects run smoothly and cost-efficient.
Surfaces: One of the largest expenditures in home renovations will always be surfaces of all kinds; Flooring, carpets, tiles and panelling are some of the popular ones. This trend will continue throughout this year.
Climate: With our ever-changing weather and concerns for keeping our homes safe and energy-efficient, new protection against the elements will continue to be a main renovation subject.
Paint: Painting is one of those tedious, yet highly rewarding tasks. Paint companies continue to see strong growth, and a fresh new coat of color can add value and fun to your home. Trending colors are forever changing and with the mixing of styles comes new ideas.
Custom/Luxury Features: There was a time not long ago that custom features were limited and rather expensive. A greater range of products are now widely available and will continue to grow this year. More homes will have the opportunity to be “customized” with products that were once thought to be only for the higher-end homes.
“Smart” Devices: Expect 2020 to be full of everything Smart! Robotic vacuums continue to be on the rise and everything from voice-activated faucets, to home protection systems will be the talk of every home. The Smart world has really taken over.

Remodeling mistakes do happen. Often times it is inevitable that there will be hiccups along the way; but knowing what the biggest issues are before you start can really be beneficial in saving you time and money.

1 – Budget: It’s a huge part of any renovation. Deciding on a sensible budget can be hard, but then sticking to it can be even harder! Plan for those extras that might come up, and know that more often than not, they do. Set aside extra money in your budget “just in case”.
2 – Materials: Picking the perfect materials for the job is important. You want the best quality for the job while keeping budget in mind. Don’t make the mistake of going for the cheapest materials, to then regret it in a year or so.
3 – Timeframe: Anticipating that your renovation will go just as planned and not run over, is asking for a headache. Any slight disturbance during the job can change the timeframe for completion. Keep in mind all that could go wrong (thus causing a time delay) so you won’t be too disappointed when/if it does.
4 – Changes: Be open to changes in design/materials. Don’t have your heart set on something and not see the bigger picture. On the other hand, don’t try to make changes when work has already started, your budget and timeframe will be greatly affected.
5 – Design: Measure, measure & measure again! If you’re hiring a pro they will know this, but home DIYer’s need to design and plan out with extreme care. Make sure everything will work out and fit how you are expecting it to. Double or triple check before materials are ordered.
6 – Contractor: Hiring a professional to do the job may seem like an extravagance that you don’t need. Trust us, you will be thankful you did! A professional contractor will have the skills, tools and manpower to get the work done faster and correctly, saving money in the long run.
7 – Questions: Ask every question you have during each stage of your renovation. Make sure you are aware of what is taking place and when. Don’t be afraid to give your input.
8 – Appliances/Furniture: Choose your appliances or furniture wisely. Research and plan. Think of resale in the future and remember that trends change constantly.
9 – Overdoing It: Remember, you don’t have to have the latest gadgets and the most technological appliances on the market. You don’t have to use granite just because it’s so popular. Always keep your budget in mind!
10 – Permits: Always make sure any work that is being done has the correct permits. Not all renovations require one, but finding out beforehand is imperative when it comes to resale.

Sheen: Flat, Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Matte and Eggshell to name a few. Chose the right sheen for your needs. Research and talk with a professional to ensure you pick the perfect type.
Purpose: If you are painting for resale and not for your own personal pleasure, always go with neutral colors that are pleasing to the eye. Nobody wants to see bright, vivid colors when touring a home for sale. Neutral colors will help prospective buyers imagine themselves in that space and what they can do with it.
Professional or Do-It-Yourself: Do you have the time and motivation to paint yourself? Is the space you are painting easy to reach?
